Uterine Cancer

  1. 95% are endometrial cancers
  2. Mainly caused by unopposed oestrogen.

 

  1. Endometrial hyperplasia caused by prolonged unopposed oestrogenic stimulation
  2. Classification:
    1. o Hyperplasia with cytological atypia = increased nuclear / cytoplasmic ratio, hyperchromasia and loss of cell polarity.
    2. o 20% will progress to adenocarcinoma
    3. o Hyperplasia without cytological atypia = benign
  3. Diagnosis: abnormal uterine bleeding, abnormal smear, abnormal biopsy
  4. Tx: oral contraceptives or progestins (fertility sparing). If cytologic atypia = hysterectomy
